Roundabout premiered at the City Gallery Wellington in New Zealand and was on view there between September 25, 2010, and January 16, 2011. A significant majority from this unique collection of exceptional contemporary artworks produced by 108 gifted artists from around the world was exhibited for the very first time. From China, India, Japan, Thailand, Bhutan, and Tibet to New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Israel, Russia and the United Kingdom, the extensive geography that separates these artists found common ground in Roundabout.

Initiated by husband-and-wife team, Peggy Scott and David Teplitzky, Roundabout was committed to facilitating creative dialogue and exchange between artists and cultures, particularly those that might not otherwise enjoy such altruistic freedoms. As such, it was a vehicle designed to celebrate our differences as well as our similarities, in acknowledgment of the diversity of our planet and the rich and vital discourse that emanates as a result of its crosscurrents.

In Roundabout, viewers were presented with an unprecedented opportunity to consider global art-making inclusively, where local traditions from around the world could be addressed without exclusively considering the artist’s nationality—instead of having uninformed notions of what the region represents imposed onto the artists’ works. Roundabout proffers an experience of universality and understanding in a world over-determined by national, ethnic, and social categories. It establishes a model that eschews labels, and in its place presents an environment that does not fetishize identity, but allows the artist’s content to speak on its own terms.
