about the artist

Nortse often draws himself into his compositions, such that his practice reads as a culminating anthology of pictorial documents that sheds light on his identity and reality. His previous training in stage design proved pivotal in his current artistic practice as he moves freely across media. Photography is combined with painting, laden with tactile materials often harvested from daily life, in order to build images that raise questions on troubling global phenomena and, at the same time, proffer hope for our collective future. A member of the Gedun Choephel Artists’ Guild in Lhasa, where he currently lives and works, Nortse has held solo exhibitions in the United Kingdom and Tibet. Group shows in which he has participated have been mounted at the Art Museum at University of Colorado, Boulder, USA; the Siebengebirge Museum in Königswinter, Germany; the Songzhuang Art Center in Beijing, China; and others. His work was also included in the international touring exhibition, Roundabout, which traveled from the City Gallery Wellington in New Zealand to the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in Israel.
