about the artist
Kevin Francis Gray flaunts his exceptional command of the chisel in every delicate fold of cascading drapery and every weightless strand of flowing hair in his masterful sculptures. Though strictly abiding by the stylistic markers of neoclassicism, the artist carves instead figures and life lifted from the neglected recesses of our contemporary metropolises. For example, his sculpture "Coco 16" is the urban rendition of the Christian paradigm of mother and child dressed in a hoodie and sneaker boots. The haunting aura that emanates from Gray’s works is reassured only by paltry allowances of familiarity, whether in the features of a face or the rendering of musculature. Gray has held solo exhibitions in Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Israel, and Switzerland, and his work has also been included in exhibitions held at the Daejeon Museum of Art in South Korea; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, Serbia; the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Valde-Marne in Paris, France; the Riso Museo d’arte Contemporanea in Sicily, Italy; and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Saint Étienne in Saint Étienne, France. Gray’s work was also included in Roundabout, an international touring exhibition that traveled from the City Gallery Wellington in New Zealand to the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in Israel.
