about the artist

Gabriel Benaim hunts down unexpected vantage points from which to capture the many unseen faces of urban metropolises and rural landscapes. Using the most traditional of equipment and materials—an 8 x 10 camera, film, and silver paper—the photographer ascribes to a purism in his art, tireless in his endeavors to observe with his eyes, then to frame with his lens, and, ultimately, to narrate with his imagery. There is no accident, only intention, in every inclusion as well as exclusion of detail. Impeccably developed, his prints are simultaneously beautiful and intellectual moments of stillness, discovered and immortalized. Originally from Panama City in Panama, Benaim now lives and works in Tel Aviv, Israel. Solo exhibitions of his work have been staged at the Walter Keller Gallery in Zurich, Switzerland, and the Ha Midrasha School of Art Gallery in Beit Berl, Israel. He has also participated in group exhibitions, such as the International Fotobook Festival at Kassel, Germany; the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, USA; the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, USA; and the Lyceum Theatre Gallery in San Diego, USA. His work has been widely published in journals and publications dedicated to contemporary photography.
